Random #5: Escape

with 2 comments

I couldn’t post yesterday. I was in no condition to. This past weekend was a blur of alcohol-drenched celebrations, catching up with old friends, avoiding one, making new acquaintances I most probably will never see again, little to no sleep, good food, draining my bank account, and dragging my weary body down shady streets. I am just now getting over a three-day hangover. That’s about as much detail as I will get into. Whatever happens in Fukuoka, Miyazaki, and Seoul stays in Fukuoka, Miyazaki, and Seoul.

I rarely travel these days so it was good to have an escape. I rarely travel these days because travel is an escape. Whenever I travel, I always take my laptop with the intent of writing in a different climate but end up never opening it. Not that I’m a tourist. I don’t enjoy sightseeing—“Wow, this looks exactly like all the pictures of it I’ve seen!”—but I enjoy experiencing the local culture (i.e., beaches and bars). Because I am clinging to the hope of getting published this year, I am abstaining from more exploration of the world and myself for the moment and, as anyone who has engaged in abstinence—intentionally or unintentionally—knows, it’s a bitch.

Congratulations, Taka and SoYoung, Bobby and Hoju.

  1. Bravo!! I don’t know you at all but I applaud your efforts. The non-fiction account of your Korean military service as an American citizen intrigues the hell out of me. Count me in–I would buy your novel and I know countless others that would as well.

Wishing you well, an Oprah gig and even the off-the- beaten path bookshop where tourists whisper “So he’s the guy……”

    Regards and keep the faith,

    • Susan,

Thank you for the encouragement. This week has been very tiring and has worn down not only my body but my will to post, although I do have one in the works right now. Hopefully, your comment will get me off my lazy ass to get it finished and posted soon.

Thanks for taking the time. I appreciate it.

      Sincerely,
      Holden
